The film is about an unconfident young girl named Alizeh (Zaira Wasim) who falls in love with Ronak (Varun Dhawan) on the first day of school after he befriends her; but their families are complete opposites and there are major obstacles to their union. The film opens with Alizeh (Zaira Wasim) waking up late for school, and she is the only student not in class. She refuses to go to school, going to a shop instead. There, she is about to buy a mango when her mother calls her in. Alizeh is then seen living with her parents in a comfortable house in India. Her father is a traditional man who took 11 years to agree to let her go to a modern school and live alone with her mother. However, once Alizeh enrolled at the school, he found it difficult to watch over her from home since he is old-fashioned and sees nothing wrong with traditional values. Her mother is more liberal, being a lawyer. Alizeh enjoys telling her family's stories to get them to see the world differently. It is also shown that Alizeh struggles with lying to them about where she goes while out in school, trying to keep her parents from worrying about her while she is at school. Alizeh has a crush on Ronak (Varun Dhawan), which she reveals to her mother after eavesdropping on him talking about it with his elder brother, Arjun (Shuvro Coker). She tells him that she loves him too and they exchange numbers. After class, Ronak asks Alizeh if she would like to go out with him. She says yes, and is then approached by her crush, Omkar (Shashank Arora), who asks Alizeh to go to the school party with him. She declines and instead goes with Ronak. At school, Mrs. Bhalla (Parveen Bawa) is seen scolding Ronak for not paying attention in class and tells him that he is a student who studies well without any pressure from his father and that he has something to prove. She also commends Alizeh for her good work but is slightly critical when she says that she wants to be a doctor when there are no female doctors in the family. She tells Alizeh that she will be pulling all-nighters to study medicine and make her dream come true. When Alizeh walks pass Ronak's house, Omkar follows her and tries to talk to her. She does not want to converse with him, feeling that he is harassing her. However, Ronak comes out and tells Omkar to stop talking to his sister like that because that is not how people should act in public (he also says that he is coming back, using the exact words Omkar used with Alizeh). He then threatens Omkar about telling anyone about their relationship.
